Karen Mooney & Southern Style Now
We've asked your favorite Southern design influencers how they define Southern style now...
Q: What does “Southern Style Now” mean to you?
Karen Mooney: Southern style is classic, confident and welcoming. Southerners grow up throwing their doors open to guests — entertaining is in their lifeblood. So, having a pretty home isn’t enough. It has to wrap its arms around your family and guests and make them feel, immediately, at ease.
Q: Can you see a thread of Southern influence into the work of certain designers? If so, how does it display itself
Karen Mooney: Designers who embrace classic design but do not hold it sacred. They are fearless when mixing antiques and cutting-edge style. A prime example of this to me would be Miles Redd. He’s so well rooted in historical design, and yet still fascinated with the new and fresh. It’s fun to see him mash it all together in to something awesome.
Q: Finally, do you have a favorite Southern Style Now (Festival or Showhouse) anecdote that you can share with us?
Karen Mooney: Spontaneously hopping on the trolley with my colleague (Mollie Kitchens) after the New Orleans gala with no cash, a glass of wine, wind in our hair and absolutely no idea where we were going. It was the perfect adventure!
